Debt-free Family: Experiential Learning for Financial Empowerment

The goal is to prevent youth falling into poverty in Hong Kong via financial literacy education, also whilst combating social exclusion.

Social Problem

  • According to Investor and Financial Education Council, from a survey conducted with students between secondary 3 to secondary 5, 59% of the interviewees claimed to have overspent before, of which 32% had overspent for 3 months ahead in 2018
  • Over 60% of young working adults have problems covering their expenses
  • Lack of income has implicitly coerced underprivileged youngsters to resort to alternative financing source, such as credit card loans, where young adults raked card loan that is only repayable after 19 months and 80% of them will continue unsustainable high-spending lifestyle despite facing credit card debt

Social Innovation

  • The boardgame has localised content and realistic mechanisms
  • Have an add-on role-play scenario that requires participants to work together amongst themselves to overcome the credit card debt situation
  • Add situations faced by ethnic minority throughout the game to enhance the understanding of all players for their plights and foster inclusiveness

Expected Social Impact

  • Organize Interactive Workshop
  • Recruit 600 students aged 10-18 as our target beneficiaries
  • Train a total of 6 guest speakers/game hosts and 30 facilitators
  • A total of 3 sessions of whole-day training will be conducted
