By equipping 400 local tertiary students with cultural skills through online modules, expert-led seminars and volunteer service, the project aims to increase cultural competency, enhance empathy towards EM communities, and improve collaboration skills.

Social Problem

Discrimination against ethnic minorities (EMs) in Hong Kong creates feelings of exclusion and marginalization. Their lack of representation in government and society, combined with low cultural sensitivity and insufficient Chinese education, complicates their identity. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated their vulnerability, leading to social isolation and scapegoating. EMs often face lower socioeconomic status and educational attainment, restricting access to resources. Educational segregation limits their opportunities, as they encounter stereotypes and inadequate support in learning Cantonese. Additionally, language requirements act as indirect discrimination, hindering equal access to education and the labor market.

Social Innovation

  • Technology Integration and Experiential Learning Opportunities: learning management system (LMS) serves as a centralized, digital hub for students. focused specifically on self-paced learning modules, interactive multimedia content, and supplementary educational resources, related to ethnic minority (EM) communities.
  • Blended Learning Approach: The project combines online modules with expert-led seminars conducted by EM professionals and representatives.

Expected Social Impact

  • Individual Level: Personal Growth and Empowerment, Career Advancement Opportunities, Increased Self-Awareness and Empathy
  • Institutional Level: Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives, Improved Employee Engagement and Retention, Enhanced Reputation and Brand Value
  • Societal Level: Promotion of Social Inclusion, Reduced Prejudice and Discrimination, Strengthened Community Bonds, Social Opportunity Cost Savings, Generating Social Capital
