Home Care Support Service for Ethnic Minority Elderly

Providing home care services to ethnic minority elders through the training of a team of multicultural care workers, to promote social integration and enhance their quality of life.

Social Problem

  • Growing Population: The ethnic minority elderly population (aged 60 and above) in Hong Kong has risen significantly, from 16,279 to 37,296 over the past decade.
  • Healthcare Needs: Elderly from Pakistani, Nepalese, and Indian communities have a higher prevalence of chronic conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes, compared to their Chinese counterparts, increasing demand for long-term care services.
  • Language Barriers: Most ethnic minority elderly lack awareness of Hong Kong’s elderly care services due to language barriers.
  • Service Gaps: Current community care services fail to address the language, cultural, and religious needs of South Asian elderly.

Social Innovation

  • This project pioneers community care services tailored for ethnic minority elderly, addressing the service gaps in Hong Kong.
  • Launches the first training program for ethnic minority caregivers, equipping them to serve as multicultural care ambassadors.
  • Establishes caregiving guidelines for ethnic minority elderly, providing cultural sensitivity training for mainstream service providers.

Expected Social Impact

  • Train 20 multicultural care workers with a 60-hour training on home care service for ethnic minority community
  • Provide 9,100 hours of home care services in total for 200 ethnic minority elders
  • Create a training kit for mainstream service providers on home care support services for elders of diverse races.
  • Offer cultural-sensitive training to mainstream service providers.
  • Reach out to mainstream service providers to procure outsourced home care service for this project.
