Repair Café HK

By providing home and appliance repair services for low-income families and elderly living in subdivided units, the project aims to improve their home environment and quality of living, and to help them in saving on related expenses.

Beneficiaries:
Service Types:

Social Problem

  • Low-income families can hardly afford the expenses of home repairs and lack the knowledge and skills for simple repairs, leading them to continue using appliances that post safety risks or tolerate home maintenance issues.
  • Subdivided unit owners are generally unwilling to take up the responsibility for repairs, and most repair workers in the market also refuse to undertake repair work for subdivided units due to the lower profit they make from minor repairs. This further exacerbates the impacts of home maintenance issues on subdivided unit households.
  • Also, Hong Kong faces a high volume of discarded electronic appliances and devices, making appliances repair a priority option for low-income families to save expenses.

Social Innovation

  • Training volunteers to provide repair services for low-income families and individuals living in subdivided units.
  • Providing repair and refurbishment services for second-hand electronic appliances to low-income families in need, reducing electronic waste, and utilizing resources to improve the quality of life for the grassroots community.
  • Opening co-repair space to enable community members with repair needs to share knowledge and tools, thereby strengthening the community support network.

Expected Social Impact

  • Providing inspection and repair services for 960 individuals and offering repair practice opportunities for 480 volunteers.
  • Offering home maintenance and appliance repair training for 960 participants.
  • Opening co-repair space to address the issue of lacking tools or space for repairs.
  • Establishing an appliance matching platform to collect donated appliance samples or refurbished appliances for families in need, thereby improving their home living environment.
