The Oxfam Trailwalker (OTW), one of the largest hiking fundraisers organised by Oxfam Hong Kong (OHK), ended successfully this morning. The last teams (team nos. 0366 and 0431) crossed the finish line together in Yuen Long at 9:03 am today, completing the 100 km trail in 46 hours and 3 minutes. This year, 1,271 participants, or 88.3 per cent, completed the OTW.
Michael Wong, Director of Fundraising and Communications at Oxfam Hong Kong, said: ‘It’s been three years since we’ve been able to come together like this, but we’re here and we’re excited to be celebrating the last team that persevered till the end! The persistence that each team showed is the same persistence that’s needed in the fight against poverty. And every step each participant took on the trail is helping us in our efforts to fight poverty, and is improving the lives of people around the world who live in it.’
Around 400 teams, or roughly 1,600 participants, joined OTW 2022. In teams of four, participants aimed to complete the 100 km trail, which runs along the MacLehose Trail and other trails, within 48 hours. The OTW trail begins in Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung and ends at Po Leung Kuk Jockey Club Tai Tong Holiday Camp in Yuen Long.
OTW 2023 is currently scheduled for 24-26 November 2023. The OTW is one of the largest hiking fundraising events in Hong Kong. All funds raised through the event will go towards OHK’s poverty alleviation projects, and disaster relief and advocacy work to improve the lives of people living in poverty in Hong Kong and around the world.
About Oxfam Trailwalker
Oxfam Trailwalker (previously called ‘Trailwalker’) began in Hong Kong in 1981 as a military training exercise for the elite Queen’s Gurkha Signals Regiment. In 1986, Oxfam Hong Kong was invited to co-organise the event and in the same year the event was open to the public. Along with the retreat of the Gurkhas in 1997, Oxfam Hong Kong took over the event.
