Integrating Technology and Traditional Techniques to Improve the Social and Emotional Well-Being of Autistic Children

To support the social and emotional well-being of autistic children and caregivers through an online gamified learning platform (CROWN), centre-based RABI® training, and family counseling.

Beneficiaries:
Service Types:

Social Problem

  • The number of autistic school children in Hong Kong is rising, with 7,400 in primary and 6,790 in secondary schools in the 2024/25 academic year.
  • School-based support for autistic students is inadequate, lacking sustainability and expert involvement, while grassroots families cannot afford expensive private training.
  • Autistic children and their parents commonly experience emotional distress; studies show 50% of surveyed children have anxiety or depressive symptoms, and parental stress reaches clinical levels.

Social Innovation

  • An integrated intervention model combining innovative technology (CROWN online platform and centre-based RABI® training) with traditional training and counseling.
  • The CROWN platform features 20 interactive games covering 200 social skills topics, with data analytics to track progress and enable continuous improvement.
  • Uses device cameras to record children's screen-gazing duration to train attentiveness and eye contact, with a reward system (virtual crowns) to enhance learning motivation.

Expected Social Impact

  • 400 autistic children as primary beneficiaries (250 in CROWN; 100 in centre-based RABI®; 50 in family counseling)
  • 350 caregivers engaged as secondary beneficiaries
  • 225 low-income families served with subsidized services
